Hello Esther, been meaning to do this for ages.....yes the transition is going smoothly, we r enjoying our new job ;-)
We arrived at the hospital at 1.30am and baby was born as the dawn broke just before 6am nice and quick and easy and 1 week early!! so how did it all happen......
My surges began on a Sunday evening after coming home from our last attendance at the Amazing Birthing weekend (having first attended when I was only 16weeks pregnant) they continued all the next day getting slightly stronger and closer together - they just felt like tightening sensations, nothing that stopped me in my tracks. My parents were visiting and then my husband and I were enjoying the warm sunny June day and feeling very relaxed. By around midnight I was thinking of going to bed for a sleep for an hour or two before going into the hospital but my mother strongly encouraged us to head off to the hospital. I didn't want to be in there too early and have hours waiting on baby to make an appearance or low and behold to be induced!!!
On arrival at the hospital there was no rooms available in the labor ward and we were taken to a ante natal ward and my progress was checked, I was only 1-2cm and as the nurse would not let my husband into the room with me (as there were other women in there) I wanted to go home again!! the options given so as hubby could be with me were to walk or have a bath - I choose the latter and spent 2 hours in the bath with my husband reading meditation scripts to me. This really helped me to stay relaxed and focused on the task in hand and the surges became stronger.
When I got out of the bath I was 8cm and taken to the labor ward straight away, things were moving along very swiftly by then, the midwife said she would check my progress but then said there was no need, as it was obvious to her baby was ready to come. My husband barely got the music playing in the room and to discuss the birth plan with the midwife all the while my waters were breaking and I could feel a lot of pressure then with my surges. I got on the bed but didn't like lying on my back, with the midwife trying to get a trace on baby's heartbeat. I got up on to my knees leaning up on the back of the bed and this was much more comfortable. My husband was reminding me to breath and was counting along for me with each surge and a few times he reminded me to look into his eyes and breath when I was losing focus.
It was just a few more surges then and the midwife said she could see the baby's head, I put my hand down to touch him and hubby went to have a look at his head crowning. That was it he was born moments later and passed up to my waiting arms, my husband cut the cord and I held him for about an hour and a half before he was taken to be weighed and given the once over. Then we all cuddled up on the bed and had breakfast and listened to some music, musing at the wonder that we had created!!
It was truly an amazing, life changing wonderful experience. The AmazingBirthing preparation really helped me to remain calm and relaxed and to have the smooth gentle birth I wanted for baby and me.

Birth Story from Vera, first baby, June 2009
Vera came to see me for one-to-one sessions, as the weekend course didn’t suit her for several reasons. She was accompanied and supported by her sister. What shows nicely in Vera’s story is the fact –reported so far by many mothers- that labour “doesn’t feel like labour” for a long time during the labour time, and only gets more intense in the last few hours before giving birth. This helps mother and baby to prevent exhaustion and remain energetic for the final phase, the actual birth. (Esther)
Hi Esther,
Well, Keelan is now 10 weeks old and I’ve finally got a chance to sit down and write to you about my amazing birth experience – one I can’t wait to experience again.
I felt some discomfort around 6am. By 8am I decided it was time to get up and have breakfast. My surges were every 15, 10, 5 minutes and changed all the time – I thought, this was all a trial run: I kept myself busy and finished my ‘Hypnobirthing” book. By around 4pm I decided to ring my sister, who was in Kerry. She said, it sounds as if you are in labour and would you ring the hospital. I was very reluctant to ring anyone, as I wanted to avoid going into hospital and being induced. Around 5pm my sister rang me again and convinced me to see one of the midwives in Castlebar General Hospital. The midwife told me I was in false labour, but if I wanted to be checked out that I could go in. I choose to stay put and use the breathing techniques.
By 9pm my husband finished work – I got him to buy me lots of chocolaty things to munch on. I guess, this is how my body told me to get some energy in. By 11pm my surges were 5minutes apart and my husband said, maybe we should go to the hospital. I said no, I’m not leaving until my waters break. I used the exercise ball and got down on all four to rock back and over. I quickly explained to my husband about massaging my back, in case this was “it” – I was still unsure, as the midwife convinced me it was false labour. At 1.40 I was on the ground, on my side, when I felt a huge surge and next thing I felt and heard my waters break. As the waters trickled out, I felt a lovely comfort. As soon as this stopped, my surges got stronger and stronger. My husband said: ok, this is it, we are going!
I cannot believe how calm I was – I told him there is no rush, I’ve got two hours to get there after the waters break. Maybe we could have gone a bit earlier... After we got ourselves together we headed to the hospital. By arrival I was fully dilated, tried some gas, but it made me feel sick, so I couldn’t use it. 40 minutes after arriving in hospital, Keelan was born. The midwife told me I was pushing for 15 minutes, but I didn’t tear much, had only to get one stitch on the inside. I am so proud of how we all handled the whole situation! I fully recommend not using any pain relief, especially after hearing later in the ward other women’s stories about their horrifying experiences.
I asked one of the midwives, if Keelan had been in any distress during labour. After checking my chart she said, normally if the labour is good and baby shows no distress, we give a 9 (APGAR score, E.M.). They gave Keelan a 9.5 out of 10. I am so delighted he had an amazing birth experience as well as myself!
We have such a beautiful baby, who is an angel – so calm, never cries unless hungry, is so good with everyone, is laughing and smiling now and making all his little sounds – I just melt every time I look at him.
I can’t wait to go through this all again. Thank you so much for all your help. I’ll definitely be recommending AmazingBirthing to all my friends. I just hope they decide to do it, as I fully believe that if I hadn’t done it, my birthing experience would have been a different one.
The midwives were amazed that I was fully dilated on arrival, especially it being my first child. I will enjoy telling my Birthing story for many years to come. By the way: The Birth Dream that I wrote out while doing your course – most of it came true. I am truly blessed with this Amazing Birthing experience.
Thank you so much

"Hi Ester, Hope you're well. Just wanted to send you a quick email to let you know how it all went. On the tuesday night I woke up at bout 4 am with some bleeding so when I phoned the hospital they told me to go in (was also worried as he had only done 12 kicks that day he was however just havin a lazy day). When I got there they checked everyhing and was fine except for my blood preasure which was high so they said they would keep me for a while.
Later that day when the midwife examined me I was 2cm dilated so in her words I'd have the baby by the time she'd back in the morning. About 2am I started getting surges fairly regular bout 5-8 mins apart was doin my breathing and they put me on monitor told me ring Padraig bout 6am then at 9 all stopped so againg they debated bout sending me home but as we are hour from hospital said they'd check again. This time I was 3cm then at noon surges started again bout 5 mins lasting at least at min they wrote on my chart I had an excellant breathing tecn. But again bout 6 or so they stopped.
At this stage I was ready to go home cause if nothing else I might get some sleep. All during this we tapped, massaged my ankles with caraly sage sat on the ball walked the hall listened to the birthing cd and had Padraig hypnotise me did rose meditation. So yet again I sent my husband off after getting two panadol because at this stage my lower back was so sore. So trying to get some sleep they start up again but 15 mins apart so at this stage i think nothing happening but I really want sleep and the nice midwife said she would give me pitocin so I go looking for her and she says she will examine me first and I'm 4 cm and then my waters break. So get himself back and finally get to see the labour room.
As my little bundle of joy had done his first poo I was put on the monitor and kept on it. However I was allowed hang over the back off the back of the bed for a few hours, but at 8.30 when I was fully dilated I was totally knackered and although I tried to keep up j breathing now I think my heart was really not in it and I just wanted sleep 2 nights no sleep had really taken its tole on me. So in the end I resorted to pushing and at 10.25 my beautiful son was born. Throughout all this I have to say my husband was fanastic and really helped with the breathing, meditation and I really couldnt have done it without his support. So in the end I did have the pitocin and gas and air. Which I think had I not panicked at 4 am tuesday moring things would have been a whole lot different but on the plus side it was a fairly good labour until the last half hour at which stage I taught it would never end and I was falling asleep between surges.
So all in all I will practise my j breath more if there is another one as the slow breathing was really good but a little bit of advice is practise it in different positons i.e stand lying etc. I used to be always sitting and it took me a while to get the hang of it in different postions. p.s. I will get Padraig to send you his version too. But again Ester thank you so much for all your help and guidance as it made my whole pregancy a very enjoyable experience.
Best wishes"

My AmazingBirthing Experience...
Generally by doing the course I had brilliant tools for that moment of labor and birth! My partner and I we were practicing different techniques that were taught at the course and I was listening to the birth relaxation CD and doing yoga everyday when time got closer!!
When we went to hospital neither one of us thought that I’m really on labor first because I wasn’t on big pain and second it was 11days early!! So we just grabbed my bags for the sake of it but didn’t bring any CD or files Because they were used daily and weren’t packed yet!!
It was around 3am when we were with the midwife and our lift was waiting for us to go back home. 4am the midwife told that my partner should go and get my bags cause I was 3cm open and definitely going to have my baby that day!
So we went straight to the labor ward and started to get ready! I felt sorry that I didn’t bring my CDs but the memory was in my head and helped me visualize how easy and comfortable labor will be!!
Couple of hours later I was 7cm open and my water wasn’t broken yet. We were on top of thing to that point but then midwife broke my water and things started happening twice as fast...What I didn’t realize were that my body is going to push and I should b able to control it! And I wasn’t so midwife told me to take the gas...
After all labor went quite fast Ida was born 8.02am and pushing moment it self was exactly how I pictured it. Soft, easy and comfortable! But because either one of us really knew what we were practicing 4 we weren’t 100% on top of situations!! I thought cause I practice yoga a lot I have my breath under control but when pushing started it wasn’t that easy at all keep long deep breathing and it was my partners biggest challenge to keep me calm!!
We will know 4 the next time what to practice more cause now we have experience from it and maybe I wont need to take gas at all! And my partner was saying that he didn’t think he will be that much needed. That there is moment when it’s up to him to hold things together!! But we both had positive thoughts of labor and first timers we thought we did great!!!
